Assistant Professor, Affective and Translational Neuroscience, University of Maryland

Alex is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, a core faculty member of the Maryland Neuroimaging Center, and a member of the executive board for the Neuroscience Training Program at the University of Maryland.

Alex has published more than 30 papers and theoretical reviews focused on the neurobiology of emotional traits, states and disorders in monkeys, children and adults. His work highlights the value of combining neuroimaging measures (fMRI/PET), behavioral assays, neuroendocrine measures and clinical interviews to understand the neural systems underlying negative emotionality – a key risk factor for some of the most common psychiatric disorders.

Alex also serves as an Associate or Consulting Editor at Emotion, Cognition and Emotion, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and Cognitive, Affective & Behavioral Neuroscience (CABN).
