Perla holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), specializing in the relationships between protein structure and function. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Medicine-University of Nice (France), at the Faculty of Biology-University of Barcelona (Spain) and visiting fellow at the School of Medicine-University of California San Diego, where her work focused on cell signaling, differentiation and metabolism.
Between 2001 to 2014, she was a Research Associate Scientist at the University of Barcelona, Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona (IIBB-CSIC) in Spain, where she led studies on the effect of nutrition and stress on the molecular pathophysiology of myotonic dystrophy and the epigenetic impact of physical exercise on aging and neurodegeneration.
Currently, Perla is a Research Associate at the University of California–Davis Center for Mind and Brain collaborating in the Shamatha Project, a Professor at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and a member of the scientific board of the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation.
In collaboration with the Center for Healthy Minds, she is studying the epigenetic impact of meditation in long-term practitioners.
