Wendy C. Crone is the Karen Thompson Medhi Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics with affiliate appointments in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, and she holds the title of Discovery Fellow with the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Her research is in the area of solid mechanics, and many of the topics she has investigated are connected with nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Wendy collaborated with engineering professor Susan Hagness and the Center for Healthy Minds to pilot an National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project assessing the impacts of a mindfulness-based training on engineering graduate students—particularly in the areas of fostering creativity, innovation, intellectual risk-taking and altruism.

The Mindful Engineer project brings together her longstanding interests in graduate student professional development and engineering education with her personal mindfulness practice. The team is currently expanding the scope of the pilot study to a larger cohort of graduate students at UW-Madison and collaborating with colleagues at the University of Virginia to investigate transferability of the curriculum.
