What is STRENGTHEN?
Flexible thinking, emotion, and sleep study.
The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of two different types of activities:
- Painless electrical brain stimulation delivered during sleep
- Brief, daily well-being training
We are trying to figure out whether these activities, either alone or combined, can positively impact the brain. Our goal is to increase the ability to think flexibly and to regulate emotions.

This study is led by the Center for Healthy Minds and the Wisconsin Institute of Sleep and Consciousness at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under the direction of Richard Davidson, PhD and Giulio Tononi, MD, PhD. It is approved by its Institutional Review Board, which is charged with protecting the rights and welfare of people who take part in research studies.
